Model of HMS HINDUSTAN
Your readers may remember that Richard Larn's report on the Society's visit to Lundy Island in June 2000 (SWS No 49, p 10) resulted in two letters appearing in these pages. The first was from our member, Michael Turner, who identified the model as being of HMS HINDUSTAN, reported that it was in poor condition and enclosed photographs of it in the church (SWS No 50, p 46). The second was from the Chairman of the Trustees of Ilfracombe Museum and told us of some of the chequered history of the model's ownership (SWS No 51, p 50). The correspondence prompted our Past-Chairman, Adrian Reed, to suggest to me that the Society should inform those who had responsibilities for the model of its poor state so that the situation could be corrected. As I had done business with the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine, I wrote to the director there who immediately alerted the appropriate branch of the National Museums of Scotland. They in turn reacted with commendable speed, considering that the subject was not an expected entry in their budget for the year. The man who took up the challenge was Alastair Dodds, the Curator of Transport at the National Museums of Scotland. Having made arrangements with the General Manager of Lundy, he travelled there with a carpenter - to ensure expert packing - and spent three beautiful end-of-season days preparing the model for its journey. On 2nd November the curator, the carpenter and the model embarked on MS Oldenburg and, just like the members of the SWMHS before them, were transported safely to the mainland. While we travelled to our homes in the southwest, there followed for them the long journey by road to Edinburgh. The HINDUSTAN model is now safely in the hands of the National Museums of Scotland where, in due course, it will be restored. It is good to know that interest within our Society has contributed to this satisfactory outcome.

I am looking for anyone who was in pearl Harbor my mother uncle Henry Barton was there and survived, he was a petty officer I think Chief petty officer on one of the ships that sunk but he survived. He remained in the Navy many years after and was later killed in an Auto Accident while on leave. If anyone knows of him please e mail me at nicks@homrichinc.com. Thanks
