The Alert replica smuggling lugger
Alert, a replica 1835 smuggling lugger has recently returned from
an extended sea trial. Her maiden voyage took her to several
of the islands in the North Atlantic, the furthest afield
was Iceland.
Having left Morwellham Quay on the 17th of May she sailed to
the Orkneys and Shetlands via Cape Wrath, on to the Faeroes
and then over to Iceland, returning via the Outer Hebrides.
Her best 24 hour run was sailing between the Faeroes and
Iceland, well reefed down with a North Easterly wind, when
she covered 163 miles at an average speed of 7 knots.
We endeavoured to sail into harbours whenever possible and
found the boat very handy under mizzen and jib (with the aid
of two buckets on the aft deck ready to heave over board and
tow when the boat was going too fast).
Alert is now in her mud berth at Morwellham Quay and
following a brief refit will be for sale
For the rest of this year I shall be working on the
Garlandstone, a 78' Westcountry ketch on the slipway at
Morwellham Quay before starting a small early 19th century
cutter to commission in the New Year.
