Book Review from SW Soundings No.57 (Jun 2003)
South Devon Steamers and Ferries
South Devon Steamers and Ferries by Alan Kettridge, published in 2003 by Tempus Publishing, a paperback with 128 pages and over 200 illustrations, ISBN 0 7524 2799 7 price £12.99. Alan Kettridge can be relied upon to provide a lucid and informative account on the subject of Devon ferries and steamers. A subject that is obviously close to his heart and one that he writes about with great enthusiasm. In this latest book, Alan reminds us that the focus mainly on Torquay by previous writers on passenger steamer excursions is misplaced. In reality, Plymouth and Exmouth were the main centres of coastal excursions in South Devon, whilst the principal estuarine fleets were based at Plymouth and Dartmouth. South Devon Steamers and Ferries is a very satisfying book, which successfully and convincingly supports the contention of the author. The work includes a comprehensive selection of photographs and text, all from his own collection. Tempus the publishers, are also to be congratulated on the excellent reproduction of these photographs, which contribute greatly to an ease of reading. The coastal map of South Devon on page 6 is very useful in locating geographical points such as Starcross and Oreston in support of the illustrations. Importantly, the book fills a significant gap in our knowledge of this subject and consequently makes an invaluable contribution to the maritime history of the region.
