Obituary - Master Mariner Peter Herbert
A reflection on Master Mariner Peter Herbert who sadly died in May 2003.
Regular readers of Archive will recall the two articles that I wrote upon the life of Peter Herbert in the December 2002 and March 2003 issues, from which they will have gathered that Peter’s life was full and inspirational. When the articles were written and published it was known that Peter was ill and regrettably that illness claimed his life in May 2003.
By the nature of things, when one knows and talks to old mariners, one knows that they will disappear in a fairly short time. It is sad, but one has been enriched from having known them and gained much knowledge and wisdom from them. Peter never felt that his life story would be of interest to others but I, and many others who knew him and benefited from that acquaintanceship knew better, and I am glad that at least some of his life has been recorded for posterity.
He was my friend and I, along with his many other friends, am much saddened by his passing and will miss him.
