Letter from SW Soundings No.61 (Oct 2004)
Marine painter A. Barclay
My wife and I own a small and eclectic fleet of Victorian and Edwardian vessels. Apart from
a clutch of schooners and smaller craft - three cutters and a Deal lugger, the mainstay is our
fleet of steamers. Three of these are in Italian ports, Genoa and Naples, and the others
struggle through heavy seas around the world. One of them, the Devon of Bristol, Great
Western Line, a big steamer with a full topgallantsl schooner rig besides, is taking on a
pilot from Schooner No 7. Now we don’t know exactly where she is, but we do know the name of
her painter: ‘A. Barclay’. This is a competent pierhead painting. Has anyone heard of him? He
is not in Roger Finch’s book. Nor can I find mention of him in any other source available to
me.
