Brenton, Edward Pelham - THE NAVAL HISTORY OF GREAT BRITAIN, FROM THE YEAR MDCCLXXX111 TO MDCCCXX11. C.Rice 1823-1825. First edition - the fruit of ‘six years intense labour and application’. By Captain Brenton (1774-1839), promoted for gallantry off Martinique, had served at sea throughout most of the period under review. Five volumes. Demy 8vo. Mezzotint portraits, litho plates, maps and tables. Victorian half calf, banded and gilt with ships; contrasting labels; some slight marks, small flaws etc, but still a very attractive set. Lacks three leaves of directions to the binder, but otherwise complete with all plates etc. The lithograph of Santa Cruz in volume 2 is the publisher’s substitute plate offered to purchasers in lieu of the ‘bad print’ originally produced.
