Nurse Bros of Gloucester - ship-owners
From John Seagrove 7/3/2008
Frank and Charles Nurse were related to the Bridgwater Nurse family. Does anyone know of any document/books about their coastal shipping operations, and in particular about their operation of the topsail schooner Helena Tregenza. A photograph of this vessel is urgently required.

Re Nurse Bros of Gloucester.
Charles Henry Nurse b 1848, and bro. Francis [Frank] b 1859 at Framilode, Glos. Parents: Henry Nurse and Caroline. CHN and FN both at sea at an early age, both became master mariners. Cousins to David Nurse of Bridgwater.
In early 1890s CH and F set up a coastal shipping business at Glos., [which included the schooner Helena Tregenza - my interest and acquired in 1904]. By 1910 CH had retired from active sea-going life and concentrated on running business. Frank continued at sea, at this time captaining the 3-mast schooner Lucy Johns of Glos.
The Lucy Johns was lost with all hands, including Frank Nurse, in the Celtic Sea on or about the 17 December 1910. FN was 52. At this time there were many ships lost in a series of severe gales across the Irish Sea and Bristol Channel.
Charles Henry continued running the C&F Bros shipping Co until March 1913, when he died. The Company was dissolved [his only son had died young] with all[?] his coasting vessels sold off. [The Helena Tregenza was 'acquired' by ship builders/broker W Lean of Falmouth and by Autumn 1913 the schooner was sold to The Allen family of Watchet - Charlotte and Albert.]
