Captain Charles Bullen
From Susan Jones 3/5/2008
I believe that Captain Charles Bullen also lived at Marshwood Manor in Dorset, a date stone exists of 1853 on part of the property but that was the date of his death, part of the property appears older but I cannot find out much about this connection. A friend has found a couple of references to weddings and a window in the church was provided by the Bullen family.

Captain Bullen was related to the Bullens of Marshwood Manor but there is no evidence that he ever lived there. See The Three Dorset Captains at Trafalgar, Dovecote Press ISBN 1 904349 38 2 or the earlier 1906 edition which can now be seen online here:
Appendix H, Grant of Arms Made to Captain Bullen, C.B., 3rd November 1817.

Appendix I, Pedigree of Bullen

With grateful thanks to Lynn F. Steffen for pointing out these references.

Saw your post and was trying to discern what your question was. Were you trying to make a family connection between Adm. Charles Bullen and the Bullens at Marshwood Manor. If so, I have that connection for you--yes, you are correct. They are closely related.
I am descended from Adm Charles Bullen's Uncle, Simeon Bullen, Sr.
Please feel free to e-mail me at lynn_steffen@att.net. Would love to hear from you. Are you related to the Bullens; if so, do you live in Dorset or nearby? Am planning a trip to England soon.

Date stone of 1853 is on house,it is on a wall with a more modern brick pattern than other parts of the property, perhaps it was moved. A set of initials in similar stone exists on older brickwork , but being hamstone part of it has fallen away helped by a previous gardener trimming plants. The Bullen initials and the datestone are therefore seperate bits of information. The 1853 is clear still. I have kept the broken parts of the other. The property is a hotchpotch of sections built at various times, the oldest part having a small cellar underneath, and a bell in a stone frame on top.

Susan,
Could you give the source for this possible connection between the two families.
Captain Charles Bullen is recorded as having been born at Newcastle on Tyne in 1768. In Dorset he lived at Weymouth and Burton Bradstock then ended his days in Southampton, dying at Shirley Hants in 1853 where there is a memorial. [The Three Dorset Captains at Trafalgar, Dovecote Press ISBN 1 904349 38 2]
Marshwood Manor is recorded as belonging to John, Earl Poulet in 1790, afterwards purchased by John Bullen under whose will it became the property of his great-nephew John Tatchell Bullen a minor [then 15], son of John Tatchell Bullen the late owner who perished by an unfortunate accident with his own gun in 1863. [Hutchins, The History and Antiquities of Dorset Vol II, 2nd Edn 1863, p263]
[See also 1861 and 1871 census]
Do the marriages you found show any connection with Charles?
Could it be that the date stone you found actually reads 1863, the date of the shooting accident?
