14th Century Oared Warships
From David Manley 14/3/2010
I'm trying to hunt down some (any) information on the design characteristics of 14th century ballingers and galleys that were constructed in Northern Europe. Tracking down this kind of material for Mediterranean vessels is pretty straightforward, but evidence for the design of vessels built closer to home seems pretty scarce! Thanks in advance for any help.

One of our members has provided the following information:
"David Manley may be aware of the detailed ship images on the porch of St Peter's Church, Tiverton, Devon. Some are of merchantmen and some of oared convoy escorts armed with cross-bow archers and cannon. The porch was erected by the cloth merchant John Greenway in 1517. It is later than David's period, I know, but if he thinks it would be useful, I could supply photographs of some of them."
If you would like to see the photographs please email me and I will put you in touch.
