Seabird Class by FC Morgan Giles
From Charlie Tolcher 19/3/2010
David,
I think this class was 21foot long but that depends on where the dimensions are taken from. As Walter notes in his original e mail they were built from teak and shipped out to Bombay in 1921/22. There were eight of them built at that time. I'm not sure of the hull shape with out checking over some records. But the designs of the times were similar in bow shape for Morgan Giles, although that is a sweeping statement. FCMG did design some specials designs that can throw doubt on the design shape. But rough comparisons can be made and one thing in particular makes his small boat designs stand out. Is that he made his own fittings in particular the centreboard winch, which he used on the WEC 14foot and Int.14 dinghies, on the three Salcombe yawls and other 16 and 18foot long classes.
That fitting in bronze is one of his trade mark pieces, which he did not patent, surprisingly. But his old mentor Pengelley did use patents for rowlock designs and other items.
If you have a photo of the boat it would be easier to identify the boat. Perhaps she was shipped back from Bombay, before the WW11 broke out or during.
Small craft are hard to trace and track down, good fun but life is not long enough to trace the small stuff.
