Jane Slade of Polruan by Helen Doe
Given that there is now a Daphne du Maurier festival in Fowey this local family history book should be welcomed by literary tourists, maritime historians and general holidaymakers alike. Written by Jane Slade's great, great granddaughter this is more than just the story of the rise and decline of a small, west country family firm which built, owned and traded small wooden sailing vessels from Victorian times till the nineteen twenties. Jane Slade of the title is both the widow who ran the family businesses and the schooner, built in the family's Polruan yard, which for some 50 years traded out of Fowey coastwise and also to the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic. Finally in 1929 Daphne du Maurier met the derelict Jane Slade in Pont Creek and was inspired to write her first novel based very much on the Slade family and Polruan. Although primarily a personal social history this book does touch upon the economic conditions which enabled small family firms to... Read the original book review here

the book the jane slade of polruan was a very interesting read. Doe the author evon mentions some of my distant relations. Also Doe herself is descended from Philip Salt borb 1749 died 1814 - and he too his my direct ancestor. in which I have been looking into my ship building forbears.

I would like to purchase this book as I hope that the family history will provide me with a link to my own Slade family tree who also come from Polruan, but moved to London. Can I purchase a copy online?

Dear Martin,
I have been searching high and low for info, about the schooner,Jane Slade;I am one of the Great-Grandsons of one of the Captains who sailed her during the first world war, which my Great-Grandfather,Captain Henry David Smith was awarded the British war medal and clasp and the Mercantile marine medal,as the vessel was totally unscathed due to his to him being a very competent Captain;my Great-Grandfather captained many other sea fairing vessels before and after this one;sadly I never had the honour of meeting him,as he died 11years prior to me being born, but I am now learning a lot about him, which I never knew before.
Captain Henry David Smith and his wife Lottie Olive, were lay to rest in St Andrews Church,Hamble le Rice,Nr Southampton,Hampshire;just down the road from where I live.
