Leith and Berwick smacks
Dr Michael Nix writes that he is co-authoring a book on Leith and Berwick smacks, many of which were built in Lyme Regis by William Good and in Topsham by Daniel Bishop Davy. He would be interested to know if readers have information about smacks built in the south west of England in the early nineteenth century - he is building up a database on this type of vessel. Contact Michael Nix directly on email or at 22 Forth Street, North Berwick, East Lothian,EH39 4JD
[please let us know so that we can include an item in Soundings. Ed. - Please note that a most interesting article by Dr Michael Nix will be included in the Journal of 2004]

DEAR MICHAEL
I have recently purchase a large silver snuff box, beautifully inscribed
"to captain William Nest, captain of the Walter Scott from the passengers sailing from Leith to London for his duties and consideration during this difficult journey." Nov. 1821
I wonder if you know the whereabouts of the ship's log or any history of the smack.
Have you completed your book and if so how may I obtain a copy.
If you would like a photograph of the snuff box to add to your memorabilia please let me know.
regards Peter N Gaskin
