From Jane Strange 29/8/2004
I am interested in researching the above but don't really know where to start. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

My wife's great, great grandfather, surname churchill was a harbour master, according to her mother. However we have no more details but would love to learn any more details

My great grandfather John Roper, was listed in the 1911 census as being Yard Captain of the Royal Clarence Yard Gosport. I have been unable to discover more about him in this role, nor of his record as ships master, I assume working for the Admiralty. Could any one give me guidance, into finding possible records.

Family legend (not true) claimed that one of my ancestors was harbour master at Postmouth. I checked by writing to Portsmouth library, and someone very kindly investigated for me. This was about thirty years ago, but presumably they still have information at the library.

Am trying to find out if Gt Uncle Sydney T.W. Smith was associated with Portsmouth Harbour some time in the early 1900s. It was thought he was harbour master - supported by photo with sword.
