Following last year’s successful History Day, SWMHS and Teign Heritage Centre are organising another chance to hear local experts talk about the fascinating history of Teignmouth and its surrounding area.  

Join us for coffee from 10.30 (included in the price), and we’ll start the meeting at 11 am.

Then, either side of lunch, there will be 4 talks:

The early days of Job Brothers of Teignmouth – founded by John Bulley in c 1750, it became the most important company trading between England and Newfoundland

The life and times of Captain John Jellard – who Captained Job Brothers ships early in his career before sailing his own ship Avery, built at Shaldon, round the world in 1856-57 

Thomas Luny and the maritime tradition – Thomas Luny paintings from his early days in London, to his later years in Teignmouth. 

Smugglers, pirates and privateers – hear about mariners operating within and outside the law, and learn about the secret ways and places locals used to outwit the forces of law and order.  

These talks will be given by local experts, hand-picked by the museum. 

You will not have to leave the building for lunch, as there will be an in-house buffet with a selection of cold meats, salads and sandwiches; you will be able to buy lunch at the same time as you buy your tickets.

After lunch, we have our expert shanty singer and fine squeeze box exponent, Martin Hazell,  who will sing a few of his favourite shanties from South Devon, including the Teignmouth area. So you can tell your grandchildren you were there!

At three-thirty, you can join a guided tour of the town for an hour or so, designed to look at the town through the eyes of Thomas Luny, or simply wander around its fascinating river beach which swings round opposite the Ness to become the sea beach. If it is near high tide, you may see a ball clay cargo ship undertake that ninety degree bend as it enters the river.

The ticket cost of £12.50 (SWMHS and THC members £10.00) includes coffee on arrival.  The guided tour of Teignmouth costs £2 per person, and places are limited and so will be available on a first come first served basis, when you buy your ticket.  Lunch is available in-house, and you can order your lunch when you buy your ticket for the event, which you can do by entering the number of tickets you would like in the gold box at the top of this page.  We look forward to seeing you in Teignmouth!
