The South West Maritime History Society is pleased to announce the 2026 David Clement Memorial Lecture, to be delivered by historian David Davies, Chair of the Society of Nautical Research, and author of best selling Journals of Matthew Quinton series of naval historical novels.
David will explore The Stuart Navy in the West Country, and uncover the vital role played by the South West in the development of England’s naval power during the Stuart period. Ports such as Plymouth and Dartmouth were not peripheral outposts, but central to operations, strategy, and royal influence.
Drawing on original research, David Davies will examine how regional infrastructure and maritime communities supported the emergence of a more professional, national navy.
This illustrated talk promises a fascinating insight into the South West’s maritime past and its wider national significance, it will appeal to both historians and readers of naval historical fiction.
