The South West Maritime History Society is joining forces with the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre for a special day exploring more than 300 years of Plymouth’s Royal Naval and maritime heritage on Saturday 24 October 2026.
The morning begins with a guided visit to the Heritage Centre and an opportunity to discover its fascinating collections and historic Devonport Dockyard pay-book records. Visitors with relatives who served in the Royal Navy or worked in Devonport Dockyard can also submit details in advance, allowing the Centre’s research experts to investigate their family connections.
In the afternoon we move to HMS Vivid for three specialist talks. Peter Holt and Mallory Haas of The Ships Project explore the marine archaeology of Plymouth Sound; Martin Hazell tells the story of Cyril Tawney and Royal Navy and dockyard songs; and Clive Charlton examines First World War troopship arrivals in Plymouth Sound.
Places are strictly limited to 40 and the full day costs £12 (SWMHS Members £10).
