The South West Maritime History Society is delighted to announce that entries are now open for the first SWMHS Research Prize, established to encourage and recognise high-quality new research and writing in maritime history.
For 2026, two prizes of £250 are being offered, subject to entries reaching the required standard.
The Prize is deliberately broad. It is open to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral researchers, early-career researchers, independent scholars, local historians, SWMHS members and non-members. Entrants do not need to be attached to a university or other academic institution.
Maritime history is also interpreted broadly. Subjects might include naval history, merchant shipping, fishing, ports and harbours, shipbuilding, seafaring, coastal communities, yachting, maritime labour, trade, migration, maritime archaeology and heritage, as well as many other aspects of our relationship with the sea. Research does not have to concern the South West.
Your research may already be completed
There is no need to start a new project for the 2026 competition.
We are particularly keen to hear from people who have recently completed a dissertation, substantial research essay, thesis chapter or comparable piece of original maritime-history research. Work already completed or assessed may be suitable for entry.
Entries should normally be 8,000–12,000 words, excluding footnotes and bibliography, although longer work may be considered where justified. Research should be based substantially on original evidence rather than primarily on secondary sources. SW Maritime
Prize-winning and commended work may also be considered for publication in Maritime South West, subject to the Journal’s normal editorial process.
Closing date: 30 November 2026
