The County of Peebles, one of Craig’s “Counties”
An illustrated lecture by Bill Cumming, author of the book “Gone”: The story of the four-masted iron sailing ships pioneered by Robert Craig, which unexpectedly prolonged the usefulness of sail, and prompted a new class of vessel: the iron windjammer, that sailed the seas 1875-1904.

David Clement lived in Topsham and was Chair of the Topsham Museum for many years. An eminent Maritime Historian, he wrote the authoritative history of the 4 masted barque: Square Rigger Sunset. He also founded the South West Maritime History Society, sponsor of this Lecture series. Dr Michael Duffy, Honorary Fellow of Exeter University, and long time colleague of David’s will introduce the evening with an appreciation of his contribution to Maritime History.
The lecture will be at 7.30pm in the Matthews Hall, Topsham, which is well connected by road and rail, and has ample parking.
